AI has unquestionably created a significant impact in 2023. A lot has happened in the AI world. It is difficult to imagine if not generative what would have been the state of AI.

At the same, there have been concerns about these developments in AI

  • Eminent scholars like AI luminaries like Hinton and Bengio warned against unchecked AI advancement, fearing societal disruption and ethical pitfalls.
  • And an Open Letter from a group of AI Researchers calling for a pause on AI.
  • OpenAI’s internal conflict exposed tension between ethical principles.

Even after the above, the absence or absolute silence from market regulators and signatories’ silence clearly shows businesses are taking control of AI. It very much shows the complex interplay between ethical frameworks, financial interests, and the future trajectory of AI.

Leaving the future of AI solely in the hands of investors and markets without appropriate safeguards and ethical considerations is a risky proposition. The decision about the future of AI should not be solely in the hands of investors, markets, and a few biggies.

To responsibly steer AI, a united effort by tech, policy, ethics, and the public is essential, prioritizing ethics and societal impact. The future potential of AI should be balanced with commitment. Rather we should harness the power of AI ethically not just for profit with clear rules and human first focus. I feel striking the right balance with AI means talking together and building guardrails to avoid trouble down the road. That would help achieve a harmonious equilibrium in AI by engaging in dialogue with so-called businesses and Governments to prevent potential issues in the future.
